Mount Johnson

Mount Johnson (12,871 ft) is accessed most easily via the Treasure Lakes trail from South Lake out of Bishop. There is also cross country travel required. This was a Sierra Club Trip on August 5-6, 2006 led by Greg Mason.

Cone on Whitebark Pine


Cone on Whitebark Pine. This species can be identified by its purple cone (1.5 to 3.25"), needles five in a bunch (1.5 to 2.75"), and presence at high altitude on the tree line, 11000 ft here.

Wildflowers at our camp at 11,200 ft above the Treasure Lakes area. Scrophulariacea family (Figwort family), probably a Timberline Penstemon or Alpine Penstemon (Penstemon davidsonii). Thanks Barbee Tidball for help identifying this.
