Tule Elk near Highway 395

Taken just north of the town of independence. Tule Elk were once common in the Central Valley but were driven to near extinction by alteration of their habitat for agriculture and by hunting. Several were moved to the Owens Valley and have formed a herd.

Fossil Falls

Fossil Falls is located on the east of Highway 395 just south of Coso Junction. It was formed by the Owens River flowing over the bassalt in the river bed. The Owens River was diverted by the Los Anglese Department of Water and Power and now flows in the Los Angeles Aqueduct making the river dry.
