Mount Whitney

Mount Whitney (14,497 ft / 4 419 m) is the highest mountain in the lower 48 states of the US. It can be most easily climbed via the Whitney Trail starting from the Whitney Portal a short drive from the town of Lone Pine on Highway 395. It can be most easily climbed by either the Whitney Trail or the Mountaineers Route.

Polemonium on the Slopes of Whitney


Polemonium (aka Sky Pilot) on the Whitney Trail. These purple flowers are found on the highest peaks in the Sierra from 10,000 ft to 14,000 ft. They are very common on the upper slopes of Whitney.

Snowy Thistle on the trail to Mount Whitney


The Snowy Thistle is a white prickly plant with a crimson flower. It prefers dry open grass and woods. There are plenty of these along the Whitney Trail.
