Mount Galey

Mount Galey (13,510 ft) is located just east of Mount Sill in the Palisades area. It is a class 3 climb most easily accessed from the Big Pine Creek South Fork trail. We climbed this as a Sierra Club trip led by Ed Cottone on August 12-13, 2006.

Southwest Ridge Route for Mount Gayley

We packed in via the South Fork Big Pine Creek Trail (solid red). We left the trail at Willow Lake (9,600 ft) and hiked cross country to Elinore Lake (11,000 ft), as shown in dotted red. It was a thrash in places through willows by the creek. We camped out at Elinore Lake for one night. On the summit day we headed west and northwest to the saddle between Sill and Gayley. This was mainly class 2 cross country travel but we did need crampons and ice axes as we approached the saddle. We followed the southwest ridge to the summit encountering some class 3 rock without great exposure. We packed out to the cars the same day that we climbed the summit.

Asters on Gayley

There were a lot of these along the West Ridge from 12,000 to 13,000 ft.
