Pino on Eastern Slopes of Superstition

These are similar to the agave but with thinner leaves. They flower with a very high single 'flower' rising from the center. After flowering they die.

Palo Verde Tree

Palo verde trees have green trunks and brances and no leaves. This is an adaptation to desert conditions where they can photosynthesize in their branches avoiding the need for leaves that may loose moisture. There were numerous palo verde trees around the carpark at the trailhead and into the Hieraglyphics Canyon.
