Spanish Needle

Spanish Needle (7841 ft / 2390 m) is located in the Southern Sierra east of Pearsonville on Highway 395. On May 12, 2007 a group of us went on a Sierra Peak Section outing to this peak. Route finding was challenging and we needed a rope at times to belay exposed class 3 rock.

Spanish Needle from the North

Taken from the saddle on Pacific Crest Trail to the north of the peak. This is the point where it is necessary to leave the PCT to travel across the east slope of the peak.

Summit Blocks on Spanish Needle

The summit blocks involves some class 3 rock, including a very exposed friction slab.

The route from the PCT to the summit blocks involved a lot of scrabling over loose talus like this. Sawtooth Peak in the background.
