South Palisades

The South Palisades includes two 14,000 foot peaks: Split Mountain and Middle Palisade. There are a number of other great climbs, especially Norman Clyde, on which the easiest climb is fourth class. Access is via the Red Lake Trail (Split) and via the South Fork Big Pine Creek Trail (Middle Palisade, Norman Clyde, Palisade Crest), which starts at Glacier Lodge out of Big Pine, as shown on this location map.

North Palisades

The North Palisades are the most rugged set of peaks in the Sierra, including the most concetrated set of 14,000 foot peaks: Mount Sill, Polemonium, North Palisade, Starlight and Thunderbolt Peak. They are located west of the town of Big Pine on US Highway 395 (see Stuff on Highway 395). The North Palisades area from is approached via South Fork Big Pine Creek Trail from Glacier Lodge, the North Fork Big Pine Creek Trail also from Glacier Lodge, or the Bishop Pass Trail from South Lake.
